Acupuncture and Children’s Night Time Cough Relief: Do Needles Help?

By Acupuncturesport.com

Acupuncture and children’s nighttime cough are not often heard in the same conversation. Americans are just beginning to realize the benefits of treating children’s health with acupuncture. Typically children are afraid of needles.

Recent studies show children can overcome the fear of needles. They can gain benefits for the treatment of certain conditions from the application of acupuncture. Acupuncture is an old procedure that was commonly used over 3,000 years ago in China. This treatment is low cost and effective by working together with the natural healing ability of the body.

There are different types of acupuncture, not just needles. Massage of the meridian points is one form as well as Shonishin, which is the Japanese technique of using tools like delicate rollers, hammers and scrapers. Cupping is when glass or plastic cups create a vacuum on the skin to detoxify and relieve the area. Another technique is the Gua sha where scraping with a lid and organic balm to also detoxify the area. These last two are normally done on the back and are effective for upper respiratory problems.

If acupuncture is the type done with needles, the needles used are always disposable and make of stainless steel of a small gauge. Many chronic conditions including allergies, asthma headaches and bronchitis have responded favorably to acupuncture.

The acupuncturist first looks for external causes. Eastern medicine focuses on external or emotional factors such as wind, cold, dry, heat, summer heat and dampness factors or emotional causes such as stress from school or peers and family life. In one recent study, when using acupuncture to treat children’s night time cough and other chronic conditions, 70% of patients felt significantly less pain.

Although Traditional Oriental Medicine seems to be a fairly new practice in the United States, it’s been a major form of health care for over a quarter of the world for many years. For a serious alternative to pain, combining acupuncture and children’s nighttime cough can be a healthy match.
